ELK GROVE, Sacramento County — October 23, 2026. A broken streetlight, backed-up storm drain or dangerous road hazard can be reported to the city, but the right contact method depends on urgency. According to the City of Elk Grove’s resident services page, the online SeeClickFix reporting form handles everyday requests like potholes, litter, streetlights, sign problems, graffiti and code issues. The system is not monitored 24 hours a day, so emergencies should not be left in an online queue.
When to call immediately
The city’s 24-hour Public Works maintenance hotline is 916-687-3005. Municipal instructions give urgent examples such as roadway flooding, a tree or branch blocking the road, a nonworking traffic signal or a missing stop sign. Dangerous public-safety incidents should instead be reported to 911, and nonemergency police matters may go to 916-714-5115. If a hazard concerns an electric, water or sewer system, the responsible utility may need to be contacted as well.
What details improve a report?
For routine concerns, the city asks residents to submit each issue separately and identify the location of the actual problem, not merely the address of the person filing the complaint. Photographs, cross streets and a clear description can help staff find the hazard. A request involving a missing sign and a pothole may need two separate reports so it is routed properly.
Why streetlight reports need a pole number
The city’s Street Light Maintenance page says crews maintain more than 12,000 lights and rely on residents to flag outages on many neighborhood roads. If it is safe to do so, include the streetlight pole number, closest cross street, nearby address, whether the pole is across or between properties, and a daytime callback number. Do not climb a pole, approach exposed wiring or step into traffic to read a number.
Rainwater flooding is not the same as a sewage backup
Elk Grove’s Flood Preparedness guide distinguishes city-managed storm-drain problems from broken water-service lines and sanitary-sewer problems handled by other agencies. The city lists 916-687-3005 for public storm drainage, but provides separate contacts for Elk Grove Water Service, Sacramento County Water Agency and Sacramento County sewer systems. Knowing what is leaking or blocked may get the problem to the correct crew faster.
Before the next storm
Use the official maintenance page to document recurring potholes or drainage trouble and keep the service request number. Never attempt to open public drainage infrastructure or drive through moving floodwater. Photograph the hazard from a safe place and check official alerts during a storm.
